This past month, the Altlier team had the opportunity to attend the WordCamp conference in Turin, Italy. As a leading event in the WordPress community, WordCamp Europe 2024 brought together developers, designers, hosting providers and business owners from all over the world to share knowledge, network and celebrate the WordPress ecosystem. Our experience was nothing short of inspiring!

Setting the Scene in Turin

Turin, with its rich history, stunning architecture and vibrant culture, provided the perfect backdrop for WordCamp Europe 2024. The conference venue was a state-of-the-art facility, reflecting the city’s embrace of modernity. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was charged with excitement and a sense of community. The event was well-organised, with clear signage, helpful volunteers, and plenty of opportunities to meet and engage with fellow attendees.

A Warm Welcome

The opening remarks set the tone for the conference, emphasising inclusivity, collaboration and the power of open source. It was evident that WordCamp is more than just a typical conference — it’s a celebration of the WordPress community and the shared passion for creating and improving web experiences.

We attended a variety of sessions, each one packed with valuable insights and practical advice. The topics were diverse, ranging from technical presentations to design principles, SEO strategy and accessibility laws. While the talks were captivating, we wish that some of the sessions were longer and allowed a deeper dive into a specific topic, as the information given in certain sessions was quite basic and more directed at beginners, not experienced developers and designers.

Spotlight on Accessibility

One of the standout sessions for our team was led by Rian Rietveld and focused on the European Accessibility Act (EAA). The session explained how this law affects websites, including who needs to follow it and what happens if they don’t. Rian also discussed practical ways to make websites more accessible for everyone, stressing why it’s important and how businesses can show they’re following the rules. The Q&A at the end of the talk gave attendees a chance to ask questions and learn how to improve their websites’ accessibility.

Networking and Community

Beyond the sessions, one of the most enriching aspects of WordCamp was the opportunity to network with other professionals. We met developers from different parts of the world, shared experiences, and learned about innovative projects and solutions being developed within the WordPress community.

We also had the chance to visit the sponsor booths, where we discovered new tools and services that can enhance our workflow and deliver even better results for our clients. It was also great to meet and chat with the developers of the plugins we use in our workflow.

Reflecting on Our Experience

Attending WordCamp Europe 2024 was a rewarding experience for the Altlier team. It was a reminder of the power of community and the importance of continuous learning and sharing. The conference provided us with new knowledge and inspiration and also reinforced our passion for WordPress and our commitment to delivering top-notch web solutions.

As we return to our daily work, we’re excited to implement the insights and strategies we gained, especially in the realm of accessibility. We’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community.

Thank you to the organisers, speakers, sponsors and volunteers for making WordCamp Europe 2024 a memorable event. We can’t wait to see what the future holds and look forward to meeting familiar faces and new people at the next WordCamp conference.
